Description
Avon Mills, Inner Buildings is a woollen mill that was built in 1790 for Francis Hill and converted into flats in 1984. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with brick dressings and features a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan, stands five storeys tall with an attic, and has an 11-window range. The façade is regular, with brick segmental heads above 20th-century three-light casements. The south entrance gable has a similar three-window arrangement and a central late 20th-century two-storey porch with steps leading up to the doorway. The west gable has two windows, while the north elevation includes a four-storey former hoisting bay located three windows from the east end. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to be largely from the late 20th century. Historically, the mill was originally named Burton Hill Mill, was enlarged in 1803, and converted to steam power in 1838. It has served various purposes, including a corn mill around 1825 and a silk mill around 1850.
