Description
1 and 3 St John's Bridge is a terrace of three houses, now functioning as an attached pair, built in the early 19th century and incorporating part of 16th-century almshouses. The structure is made of squared, coursed limestone rubble, with No. 3 being rendered and previously limewashed. It features a brick gable stack on the right-hand side and ridge stacks on the middle and left-hand units, topped with a stone slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. No. 1 has a one-window range, while No. 3 has a three-window range.
The left-hand doorways are adorned with plain timber canopies and 20th-century doors. At the left end, there is a four-centre arched through-passage with a small finial and 20th-century brick lining, which contains the left-hand entrance to St John's Court. The windows feature segmental-arched brick heads with 2/2-pane late 19th-century horned sashes, and the right-hand gable has small attic casements on either side of the stack. The rear of the building has three first-floor casements. The interior has not been inspected. Notably, the archway is a 19th-century replacement of the original entrance to St John's Court.
