Description
Numbers 6 and 8 and St John’s Cottage are a group of three houses dating from the mid-17th century, with an addition made in the mid-19th century. Constructed from limestone rubble, the buildings feature brick gable stacks and a stone slate roof. They have a 2-room plan, arranged at a right angle.
The exterior comprises a single storey and attic, with a 1-window range to the front. Numbers 6 and 8 present a symmetrical façade with a centrally positioned gable dormer. The central doorways are paired and have 20th-century boarded doors set beneath a timber lintel which extends leftward over the window to its left, with a similar window to the right. These windows are 19th-century casements with glazing bars. There is a 2-light mullion casement in the attic, featuring leaded lights within metal frames with stay bars and turn buckles. Considerable alterations have been made to the ground floor. St John’s Cottage, to the left, has a lower ridge line. It features a doorway, a 2/2-pane horned sash window and a gabled half dormer containing a 2/2-pane sash. A rear range extends to the back.
The interior has been altered, and the buildings are now occupied as one dwelling. It is reported that the houses formerly had mullioned ground-floor windows.
