Description

This is a row of six houses dating from the late 18th century, which were altered in the early 20th century. The houses are constructed of painted brick with a plain tile roof, featuring end stacks and two ridge stacks. The row is composed of a seven-bay central section flanked by projecting one-bay wings. The gables of the wings have early 20th-century half-timbering replacing previous hipped roofs. The wings each feature an ashlar band that runs across an arched recess containing a ground floor casement pair. Above this band is a small, female, classical-style statue on each wing, standing on a short section of reused carved cornice. The main range includes cambered-head casement pairs and an ashlar band. The centre first-floor casement pair sits above a reset double niche with shell heads and a classical relief figure. Either side of the centre bay are double-fronted sections, each with two windows per floor and a central doorway. Each door provides access to two cottages. Carved details similar to those on the houses are said to be fragments from a previous house that stood on the site of Erlestoke Park. Historical photographs indicate that the central range originally had large, curved thatched porches and that no statues were initially affixed to the wings.
