Description

Dragon House is a cottage located at the end of a row in Downton, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of painted English bond brick and features a tiled roof with gable-end brick stacks. The building is two stories tall with an attic and has three windows across its front. The central door, which is from the 20th century, is topped by a flat stone hood supported by cast-iron brackets. On either side of the door are 20th-century three-light casements, and there is a blocked door to the left. The first floor has a three-brick plat band on the right half, with two 2-light casements, one 1-light casement, and one blocked window. The eaves cornice is moulded wood. There are three dormers with 2-light leaded casements, while the left side of the building is windowless. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension with a tiled roof, featuring 20th-century French windows, and the first floor has two 2-light casements and two 20th-century dormers in the attic.

Inside, the cottage has chamfered beams with ogee stops and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel set on English bond brick jambs. The staircase features a square newel, and the first floor includes planked doors and a 17th-century reset chip-carved panel with lozenge decoration at the top of the stairs. There is also a planked door in the attic with a wooden latch. This building was formerly a public house.
