Description

The gazebo at Biddesden House, built around 1933 by George Kennedy, is an important structure located on a hilltop. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings and features a tiled roof. The gazebo consists of a rectangular chamber and a rectangular tower that is set at an angle on the south side, both overlooking a swimming pool to the west. The entrance is from a fruit garden to the east. Notable features include a stone oriel window with columns and a parapet, concealed sashes, and a sash window with a segmental head. The tower is topped with a copper dome that has a large knob. Inside the tower, there are niches adorned with mosaics of the three muses—Erato, Clio, and Thalia—along with a mosaic dome and floor, all created by Boris Anrep. The main chamber contains a painting by Roland Pym, a marble sculpture of a naked Venus by E. Gazzeri from Rome, and a verde antico statue of a young Apollo as a hunter.
