Description

The Old Rectory is a building that originally served as a rectory, later becoming a detached house. It was built in the 17th century, with alterations and rebuilding occurring in the 18th century and the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble stone with a Welsh slate roof consisting of two spans. It features rendered brick stacks with stepped capping. The layout consists of a parallel range, with the principal front facing the rear.

The west front, two stories high and featuring four windows, has a half-glazed door and a 3-light casement to the left. To the right are three 2-light casements. The first floor has two 3-light casements, a 2-light casement, and a 12-pane sash window. Straight joints are visible on either side of the front door. The returns are windowless.

The rear front, dating back to the 1850s, includes a stone porch with a round-arched opening containing a 4-panelled door. A canted bay window is positioned on either side of the porch, and a good conservatory, with margin-pane French windows, is located to the left. The first floor of the rear front features four flush 16-pane sashes set in moulded architraves. Two hipped dormers with 2-light casements provide attic access.

Inside, the front range features deep chamfered beams and a door with two fielded panels. A 2-light ovolo-mullioned casement, originally an exterior wall now located centrally within the house, is found in the cellar wall. The rear range includes 6-panelled doors, a staircase with two turned balusters per tread and a moulded wreathed handrail, and a drawing room featuring an elliptically-arched niche.

Attached to the front is a single-story former schoolroom from the early 19th century, with a pointed planked door and two pointed leaded casements facing the gabled front. The building ceased to function as a rectory in the 1970s.
