Description

Shirley House is a detached house located in Bishopstrow Village, dating from the mid-17th century, with renovations and refenestration occurring in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble stone and features a concrete tiled roof with brick stacks. It has a U-plan layout, which was originally a hall with flanking cross wings.

The house is two stories high and has a two-windowed facade with casement windows. There is a 20th-century door to the right of the center, accompanied by a side-light to the left, and a 2-light casement window on either side. The first floor includes a mix of 1-light and 2-light casements. The right wing features two blind casements on the first floor of the gable end, while the left wing has 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors.

On the right side of the house, there is a glazed door set within an early 19th-century cast-iron canopied porch, with two 2-light casements featuring arched lights and hoodmoulds to the left. The first floor also has two 2-light casements with arched lights and hoodmoulds. The rear of the house includes a glazed door and both 2-light and 3-light casements.

Inside, the central hall contains an open fireplace with a chamfered timber lintel that has rounded corners, supported by chamfered stone jambs, and features deeply chamfered beams. The Victoria County History recorded a cruck as part of the original 17th-century timber-framed structure, which was rebuilt in stone in the early 19th century; however, no trace of this was observed during the survey in May 1985.
