Description

Upper Close is a house set in its own grounds, built in the early 19th century. It features smooth painted rendering and a low-pitched slate roof with lead hips and dressings. The building has a large, compact square shape with an asymmetrically placed projecting wing to the south, which faces the church. To the north, there is a one-storey painted brick unit with a hipped end that encloses a small paired service courtyard.

The entrance front has three windows on the ground floor, where two large 25-pane sash windows flank a projecting porch with a 'tent' roof. The porch has a panelled door topped by a fanlight and is framed by pilasters, with four steps leading up to it. On the first floor, there is a central 16-pane sash window flanked by two 12-pane sashes. The right return features a projecting wing with a canted bay that has horizontal bar fenestration below a 12-pane sash window, and to its right are two French doors beneath two 12-pane sashes. The left return displays varied fenestration, including four sashes and a six-panel door.

An external brick stack is located on this front, raised above the eaves, with two additional brick stacks at the eaves. The deep projecting eaves have a plain soffit, and the ground floor windows are fitted with panelled shutters. The house remains largely unchanged externally, except for the addition of French doors to the south. The interior has not been inspected.
