Description

The Market Lavington War Memorial is located in the churchyard outside the south porch of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary. It is surrounded by several Grade II-listed churchyard monuments and is near a former school that is also listed Grade II. The memorial is a tall hooded cross made of Doulting limestone, standing approximately 4.5 meters high.

It features a two-stepped base with a plinth that has a step on each side. A small pedestal on the plinth supports an octagonal shaft, from which the hooded cross rises, resting on a moulded collar. The front and rear faces of the cross-head are adorned with a shield that has the monogram HIS carved in low relief. The arms of the cross are supported by small foliate brackets, and both the octagonal cross shaft and the chamfer of the pedestal are decorated with roses carved in relief.

The main dedicatory inscription, carved in relief around the faces of the plinth, reads "IN MEMORY OF/ OUR MEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914–1919." On the faces of the pedestal, there are four slate tablets listing the names of the men who died in the First World War.

Additionally, two more inscribed slate tablets have been added to the steps next to the plinth. One tablet on the east commemorates the 11 men who died during the Second World War, including one identified as being from America. The other tablet on the south reads "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY SINCE 1945."

The steps and the plinth are simply corniced to allow for the placement of wreaths and floral tributes.
