Description
Maud Heath's Causeway is a pedestrian causeway built in 1812, although it has since been reconstructed. It features low brick segmental arches supported by short ashlar piers, with a rubble stone parapet that includes raised piers extending from ground level. The causeway is divided into two sections by a bridge built in 1961; the western section has 18 curving arches, while the eastern section has 46 arches and has been entirely rebuilt in the 20th century to resemble the original. Maud Heath donated land and property in 1474 for the construction and maintenance of a raised path from Wick Hill in Bremhill to Chippenham, and the upkeep of the causeway remains the responsibility of the Trustees, making it one of the oldest charities in Britain.
