Description
Maud Heath's Monument is a 17th century monument, dated 1698, dedicated to Maud Heath who died in 1474. It features an ashlar pillar on a pedestal base, standing about 3 meters high. The monument has a cornice cap and a large top piece with sundials on three faces, topped with a ball finial. The pillar includes arched-headed sunk panels with pendant keystones and carved spandrels on three sides. The west side panel is inscribed 'Chippenham Clift', the east side reads 'Wick Hill', and the front bears the inscription: 'To the memory of the worthy Maud Heath of Langly Burrell Widow who in the year of Grace 1474 for the good of travellers did in Charity bestow in Lands and houses about Eight pounds a year for ever to be laid out on the Highways and Causey leading from Wick Hill to Chipenham Clift. This piller was set up by the feoffees in 1698. Injure me not.' The sundials have inscriptions in Latin above and English below. The monument is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Wiltshire.
