Description
Elmbury Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the early 17th century, with an extension added in the late 17th century. It is constructed of banded flint and limestone, topped with a thatched roof that has a half hip on the right and a hip on the left, along with a brick stack on the left side. The cottage is a single storey with an attic and features two windows with casements.
The entrance is a baffle-entry that was formerly gable-end, with a planked door located to the left of the early 17th-century section. To the right of the door, there are two 2-light casements, and a late 17th-century bay to the left of the door contains a 3-light casement. The attic features a single casement and a 3-light casement. The right side of the building has a 3-light casement in the attic, while the left side has a 20th-century two-light casement in the attic, along with an attached weatherboarded lean-to extension. The rear of the cottage has 2-light casements.
The interior was not accessible during the survey in September 1985, but records from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England noted a chamfered beam with bar stops on the ground floor of the earlier section. The first floor includes an open fireplace with a chamfered cambered lintel set on stone jambs, and the attic has a chamfered doorcase with ogee stops. The late 17th-century bay features a chamfered beam with ogee stops, and the roof is a two-bay butt purlin construction.
