Description

The accommodation bridge on the Kennet and Avon Canal, located 500 meters east of Honey Street, was built around 1807 and later modified during the Second World War around 1940. Designed by John Rennie for the Kennet and Avon Canal, the bridge is constructed of red brick with some purple vitrified bricks and features a splayed design in both plan and section. It has a limestone parapet, a 41-centimeter brick bullnosed ring, and a three-course outset string at the base of the parapet. The bridge is topped with half-round copings and caps on the end piers. There is a cast-iron lozenge sign by the Great Western Railway mounted on a rail stanchion. During the Second World War, the bridge was fortified with five lines of iron stanchions (only the bases remain) and round solid drums. On the north side, there is a pillbox made of hollow clayware pots with a concrete roof and an internal baffle wall, which includes five gun ports. The canal works and the associated defences are of notable interest.
