Description
The south range of workshops on the south side of the Stable Yard is a late 18th-century building that was remodeled in the early 1900s. Originally a barn, stables, and tackroom, it is now used as workshops and accommodation. The structure is built from rubble stone and dressed limestone, featuring tiled roofs with bands of fishscale tiles.
At the west end of the range, the former barn has double doors and a lunette window to the left, with three lunettes to the right. A short wing that projects to the right includes a planked stable door and a lunette. The lower range to the left has planked doors and casement windows, along with a throughway leading to the yard beyond. The south side of the barn is constructed of brick and is windowless. The workshops to the right have lunettes and an oculus, as well as a Tudor-arched doorway leading to a passage and two gabled attic dormers.
Inside, the building features early 20th-century roofs, with evidence of earlier uses visible in truncated stacks and various blocked or inserted openings. This range, along with other buildings in the stable yard, was likely part of an 18th-century farm group that was later converted into stabling and carriage houses for Stourhead House.
