Description

St Michael's House is a former mill house, dating from 1796, with later 19th-century dressings. It incorporates earlier cottages to the rear and is now used as an office. Built of limestone rubble with ashlar gable stacks and a stone slate roof, the building originally had a limewashed facade. It has a double-depth plan, including right-hand wings at the rear. The symmetrical front elevation features irregular quoins, a cornice, a parapet, and coped gables. The doorway has a raised surround, a bracketed canopy, and a 20th-century six-panel door. Above the door is a 19th-century carved panel depicting a festoon and a central mask. Windows have raised surrounds with relieving arches and plate-glass sashes. A panel on the gable is inscribed with “O/ISM/1796”. The interior was largely refurbished in the late 20th century. At the rear, a pair of 18th-century, two-story former cottages are visible, featuring mullion windows that were renewed in the late 20th century.
