Description
The Comedy is a house dating back to around 1720, which was remodelled in the early 19th century and further extended in the late 19th century. It is said to have originally been two cottages. The front of the house is roughcast, with a low-pitched slate hipped roof and rear stacks. The front elevation has five sash windows with plain rendered surrounds, featuring 16 panes above and 20 panes below. A central 6-panel door is topped with a depressed-arched fanlight. A 19th-century porch constructed of ashlar in a Roman Doric style, incorporating two columns and pilaster responds, has been added; it was originally taken from a house in Devizes. The end walls are of rubble stone with brick at the rear upper angles. A north-west rear wing, possibly dating to the 18th century, is built of painted brick with a ridge stack and a coped north gable. This wing has a casement pair and triple casement on the upper floor, and a door and triple casement on the ground floor. A late 19th-century north-east rear wing also exists. The house was part of the Meux estate in the 19th century.
