Description
Longleat Lodge is an archway with two lodges, built around 1804 by the architect Jeffry Wyatville for the 2nd Marquess of Bath. The structure is made of limestone ashlar and features a classical style. The central arch is flanked on the south side by round-arched niches and Doric pilasters, with an entablature at the lower stage. The upper stage has Ionic pilasters and sash windows, topped with an entablature leading to a balustraded parapet.
On the north side, which faces the drive to Longleat House, there are cross windows flanking the arch on the ground floor, along with Doric pilasters and a frieze. The upper stage features round-arched niches adorned with carved swags. Inside the archway, there are doors with six fielded panels facing each other, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling decorated with moulded panels and rosettes.
To either side of the archway are single-storey extensions added in 1947, designed to match the original style. These extensions include semi-elliptical blind panels with cross windows and a cornice at the blocking course, while the returns have 20th-century porches and two-light casements. The lodge is enhanced by fine wrought-iron gates featuring the Thynne monogram and arms, created in the 1860s for the 4th Marquess of Bath. This structure is part of an impressive approach to Longleat House from Horningsham Village.
