Description
2 and 4 Waterworks Road are an unusual pair of Italianate houses, dated 1869. They are three storeys high and feature four ranges of windows. Constructed from red brick, the buildings have a plinth and bands over the ground and first floors that extend to the window sills and eaves. There is an incised Greek key pattern on the side pilasters, above which the bands are mitred. The windows and doors have slab surrounds, with a variety of designs: the second floor has two windows with serrated lintels and two with swagged lintels; the first floor features two round-headed windows and two with incised Tudor arches. The ground floor windows have shallow pilasters and ogee arches on the lintels, all are plate glass sashes, some with marginal glazing. The ground and first floor windows are supported by brackets below. Each house has a round-headed doorway to the left, with slim pilasters, keys, plain fanlights, and heavily moulded door panels with pointed upper sections. The slate roof has bracketed eaves and there are two brick ridge chimneys. The east gable has been altered, while the west gable end displays bands of yellow headers, three-centred arch-headed windows on the first and second floors, and a shaped window head in the gable that lights the attic, featuring the letters "J (or S) D" and the date "1869". The left-hand pilaster has "Beaumont Villas" painted on the band.
