Description
Chilvester House is a house dating from the early to mid 19th century, built on an earlier core. It features an ashlar front with a slate roof, coped gables, and end stacks. The house is two storeys high and has a main front range with five windows, a raised plinth, a band, and rusticated quoins. There is a moulded eaves cornice, and the first floor has five 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor has a central six-panel door set in a Roman Doric pedimented surround, which is early 19th century, possibly from the 18th century, and is flanked by large mid-19th century stone canted bay windows. To the left, there is a mid to later 19th century one-window extension with a large triple window on each floor, with the ground floor window projecting forward. At the rear, there is a rubble stone wing with a steep pitch that could date from the 17th century, along with a paired rear wing to the northeast. There is also a stable and coach-house range nearby, which is not included in the listing. This range has a weathervane dated 1669, which is said to relate to this property, although it may have originally come from Castle House in Calne, which was owned by the Norborne family in the 17th century.
