Description

St Elizabeth's Convent and St Osmund's Roman Catholic Primary School is a significant building located on Exeter Street, dating from the 18th century and altered around 1800. The convent house stands three storeys tall, constructed of colourwashed brick with projecting stone bands between the storeys. It features a moulded stone cornice and a blocking course, topped by a gable end slate roof. The upper floors have two tripartite sash windows flanking a central single window, while the ground floor has two tripartite sashes flanking the entrances. All windows retain their glazing bars. The central door consists of six fielded panels topped by a radiating semi-circular fanlight, set beneath a Doric porch with columns and wall pilasters, an entablature featuring a large dentilled cornice, and a moulded dentil open curved pediment hood.

To the left, there is a two-storey extension of one bay with an old tile roof, featuring one flush framed sash window on each floor, each four panes wide. Adjacent to this is a two-storey south wing from the early to mid-19th century, built of painted brick with a hipped slate roof, which also has tripartite sashes, one on each floor, and a projecting rendered section with a hipped slate roof.

Projecting level with the street is a two-storey chapel block made of red brick on a rendered plinth, dating from the mid-19th century. This block has a brick band between the storeys adorned with fleur-de-lis ornamentation returned to the south gable end. The hipped slate roof features bracketed eaves, and there are three pointed sash windows on both floors facing the street, with rendered arches. The south gable end has similar windows, with one on the first floor and another on the ground floor to the right, along with a centrally located pointed arched door also featuring a rendered arch.

Adjoining to the north is St Osmund's School, built around 1890 in relation to St Osmund's Church. This two-storey block is constructed of flint and ashlar blocks, with ashlar quoins that may reuse older materials. It has a moulded string over the ground floor windows, a hipped tile roof, and ashlar chimney stacks above the eaves. Each floor has four stone mullioned and transomed windows, comprising three and two lights, and there is a single-storey section at the rear with dormers in a similar style.
