Description

Lawes Cottage is a detached house dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with gable end stone and brick stacks, along with coped verges. The house is designed in a three-cell layout and has two storeys with four windows. A planked door is located to the right of the centre, with a three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement with a hoodmould to the right, and three-light and two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements with hoodmoulds to the left. On the first floor, there are two three-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds and two two-light mullioned casements. The left side has a two-light mullioned casement with a hoodmould on both the ground and first floors, while the right side features an external brick stack. The rear of the cottage includes two three-light wood mullioned casements and a two-light leaded casement that lights the stairs on the left; the first floor has two three-light wood mullioned casements, two flat-headed dormers, and one raking dormer above the attic stair window. Attached to the left is a 19th-century extension. Inside, the cottage has chamfered beams with ogee stops on both floors, and a beam in the central ground floor room is supported by a jowled post. There is a partly blocked open fireplace in the west room, and winding stairs at the rear lead up to the attic. The roof is a three-bay collar-truss design. The cottage is named after the composer Henry Lawes, who was born in Dinton in 1596 and is known for writing the music for Milton's Masque 'Comus', as well as his brother William, who was also a composer and musician.
