Description

Dinton Lodge is a late 19th-century house that appears to incorporate elements of a mid-18th century building. It is constructed from Chilmark stone ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof with hipped and gabled ends. Axial stacks are finished with moulded cornices and yellow clay pots. The house seems to have originated as a small, mid-18th century dwelling, which was later extended and remodelled in the late 19th century.

The two-storey house has an asymmetrical three-window front on the southwest side, featuring one-, three-, four- and six-light stone mullion windows with dripmoulds. Projecting bays flank the sides, each with curved gables displaying moulded copings, the right-hand bay being slightly wider. A central doorway is sheltered by a gabled stone porch, incorporating a four-centred arched doorway and flanking single-light windows. The southeast facade is of three bays, with a curved gable bay to the left and a wide two-story stone bow window. To the right, there are two four-light stone mullion windows. The central recessed bay has an arched porch with a stone balustraded balcony above. An engraved date stone of 1896 is set in the porch, accompanied by stones bearing the initials J.P.M. and O.S.M.P.M.

The front garden to the southeast is enclosed by decorative cast iron railings set upon an ashlar plinth. The railings feature terminal piers, stanchions, and alternating spearhead and looped shafts with top and bottom rails.

The interior of the house has not been inspected.

Dinton Lodge is a late 19th-century house that incorporates sections of an earlier mid-18th century house. Its distinctive and unusual architectural detailing makes it historically significant. It contributes significantly to the historic character of Dinton and forms part of a valuable group of buildings.
