Description
Jesses is a detached house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 1930s. It is constructed of rubble stone with a thatched roof, featuring a half-hip to the left side and stone stacks with moulded cappings. The house originally comprised three cells, with the entrance positioned into the hall at the rear of the stack. It is a single-storey building with an attic, and has four windows. A 20th-century Tudor-arched doorway is centrally positioned, and there are three-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casement windows to the left and two-light and three-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds to the right. The attic has three full gabled dormers, each containing three-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casements, with the left dormer being a 1930s addition. A three-light C20 casement is set within an eyebrow dormer on the left side. The left return has a four-light C20 casement and a three-light mullioned casement on the ground floor, plus two three-light casements to eyebrow dormers. The right return features mullioned casements and a C20 door; a wing to the right is a 1930s addition designed in the 17th-century style. The rear of the house includes an added outshut to the main range, a gabled dormer, and a gabled stair turret, with a C20 mullioned and transomed window. The wing to the right has C20 casements.
Inside, there are deep chamfered beams with stepped stops; the hall has a reset wainscot panelled dado. The west drawing room contains a Tudor-arched stone fireplace set within an open fireplace, featuring a deep chamfered lintel. A wood mullioned window has been retained from the former external wall, and is now situated within a passage. The east room has an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on stone jambs. The first floor was not accessible during the survey in April 1986.
