Description
48-52 Silver Street is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. It features a four-storey triple gabled front, constructed from timber frame with an oversailing second floor. Number 48 has a tile-hung second floor and mathematical tiles on the first floor. Numbers 50 and 52 were formerly stuccoed and tile hung, now featuring modern two-light transomed leaded casements and a canted bay. Number 48 has one window in the gable and two on the first and second floors, with flush framed sashes that are round-headed in the gable. The building has modern shop fronts.
To the right of Number 48 is a passage entry to St Thomas's Church Yard and the south porch of the church. This entry is framed by stout Doric pilasters that support a three-centred arch with a moulded architrave and a moulded and scrolled keystone, along with painted plain wrought iron gates, all dating from the early 18th century. There is a similar archway at the rear facing the church, with plain 18th-century rails extending out on each side. The rear elevations show modern tile hanging on Numbers 50 and 52, while Number 48 retains earlier tile hanging and flush framed sashes. The passage roof has exposed beams, and there is a dragon beam in the first floor of Number 52. The roof structure is partly intact.
The Poultry Cross and Numbers 36 to 52 form a group, and the rear elevations of Numbers 1 to 17 on Minster Street also form a group with the rear elevations of Numbers 36 to 52 and St Thomas's Church in St Thomas's Square.
