Description
22 and 23 High Street are two shops built in 1908, showcasing a Mannerist Classical style. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The upper floors have 12/2-pane sash windows, while the sides of the bays feature 6/1-pane windows. Four wide pilasters, adorned with small recessed ornamental panels that include carved drops and cornices at the fourth floor, rise above a modillion cornice and parapet. The pilasters and parapet have moulded coping. A broken pediment with a modillion cornice and a cartouche-framed shield in the tympanum is positioned over the central bay. Each range below the modillion cornice has a full-height flat-roofed canted bay with a cornice. The fourth-floor windows have aprons with guttae, the third-floor aprons are shaped, and the first-floor aprons have been lost to 20th-century shop fronts. The interior has not been inspected. This building, along with No. 21, is a notable example of early 20th-century commercial architecture.
