Description
10 and 11 High Street is a house that has been converted into a 20th-century shop with a dental surgery above. Originally built in the 18th century, it was refronted in the early 19th century. The exterior features painted limestone ashlar and a plain tile roof with a hipped dormer. There are ashlar stacks with brick shafts at the gable ends. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a five-window range. The first floor has 6/6-pane sash windows, with paired windows in the outer bays. The shop front, dating from the late 19th century, is wooden and features slightly projecting bays, a continuous bracketed entablature with a dentil cornice, and central paired chamfered doorways with overlights. There is also a doorway to the left that is accessed by steps. The gabled rear of the building has freestone quoins and 2-light ogee-moulded mullioned windows, along with a 20th-century extension.
Inside, access to the upper floors is via a service door on the right, which has six panels, is glazed at the top, and features late 19th-century bolection moulding with a shallow overlight. The first floor includes some chamfered beams and an 18th-century fireplace located at the rear of the front right room. There are also some repositioned 18th-century two-panel doors with L-H hinges, and a room in the rear wing has a late 19th-century cornice. The six-bay roof has butt-tenoned purlins, with the apex boarded over.
