Description

Nos 16, 18, and 18A Church Street is a building with a late 17th century to early 18th century front, attached to a much older house that has undergone significant alterations inside. The structure is two storeys high, built of red brick with an altered ground floor. It features an old tiled roof, with a gable end chimney on the right and a front wall chimney on the left. No 16 is framed by brick piers, and the first floor has moulded mullion windows with casements and corner stops, comprising five windows arranged in a 2-3-2-3-2 light pattern. A cogged eaves cornice extends from the centre of No 18 across to No 18A. No 16 has a moulded flush framed late glazed sash window to the right, positioned below a fascia that connects with the door. No 18 features a central late glazed sash window with a moulded flush frame beneath a brick flat arch. The door of No 18 is roughly central to the three properties, consisting of six panels (the upper two being glazed) with a narrow overlight. No 18A has a late 19th century shop front with three panelled framing pilasters, scrolled brackets supporting a fascia with a dentil cornice, two plate glass windows, and a glazed door to the left. At the rear, there are two storey half rubble-built extensions that may date back to the 16th century. Inside, older rafters indicate that the current front has widened the house by about three feet. The apex of three possibly cruck trusses is visible among the heavy scantling roof rafters. A large stone chimney stack is located in the rear wing and is not aligned with the former roof, suggesting an 'L' plan layout.
