Description
12 Church Street is a late 18th-century building, although deeds suggest its origins are around 1730. It is two storeys high and originally had an attic. The construction features brickwork on a stone plinth. Rustic stone quoins are visible on either side, although the left-hand quoin is partially obscured by a modern brick buttress. A moulded stone string runs along the first floor, and a stone bed moulding defines the eaves, with a more pronounced design on the return to the right. The roof is covered in double Roman tiles and is hipped on the right side. The windows are sash windows; three on the first floor, each with four panes and additional side glazing, and two similar windows on the ground floor. The central entrance is a six-panel door set within a plain wooden surround, topped by a stone cornice and a broken pediment supported by cut scroll brackets. A stone staircase leads to the front door. At the rear, there is a later lean-to ground floor passage, and an earlier two-light window on the first floor to the left, featuring a moulded mullion and dripmould. On the return to the right (south side), decorative leadwork is set over the gutter. The interior contains a staircase with wide rails, featuring two turned balusters per tread.
