Description
The ramped path located to the right at the south end of the wall in front of the builder's yard dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone and varies in height from 15 to 20 feet. The main feature is a large round-headed archway with shouldered soffits and a keystone, which leads into the main yard. This archway is flanked by two round-headed recessed (blind) panels, also featuring keystones, and there are similar square-headed panels outside of these. The wall has a continuous plinth and some stellar-shaped braces.
To the right, the wall curves back approximately 5 or 6 feet from the road to accommodate a sloping ramp that leads up to the right. This ramp continues diagonally up the hill and is known as Well Path. Behind the ramp, the main wall has four recessed panels, alternating between round and square-headed. In front of the ramp, there is a wedge-shaped wall with four recessed panels that increase in size towards the right. All of these panels are round-headed, with the smallest on the left containing a well known as Lady Well. The wall features a sloping parapet with chamfered coping that runs up the incline, along with a projecting plinth.
This structure forms a group with several other listed buildings, including Nos 5 and 6, Nos 27 to 31, and the wall in Newtown, as well as Nos 7 and 9 to 19 in Barton Orchard, along with other listed buildings in Church Street, The Chantry, Little Chantry, and the Catholic Church of St Thomas More on Market Street.
