Description

This building began as a Church of England girl’s school and school house, constructed around 1852 to 1860. It is now a house and gallery. The building is built of brick with flint detailing, and has a tiled roof. The left side is a one-story house with an attic, featuring a three-bay symmetrical façade focused on a two-story porch with a pointed brick archway. Timber casement windows are set within brick segmental arches, with diamond leadwork filling the spandrels. A room above the porch has a four-light window, and the gable is covered in tiles. A small gable is located over the right bay. A one-story link block, one bay wide, connects the house to the school building. The school itself is a one-story structure with a lean-to cloaks-lobby on its gable, built from matching materials. Later 19th-century classrooms were added to the rear, creating a small light well along with a cloakroom. The main schoolroom has tall, three-light timber Gothic windows, extending up to half-hipped, flush dormers. The windows have leaded glazing. Inside, the schoolroom has a steeply pitched open roof supported by arched braced trusses on corbels, creating a parabolic shape.
