Description
This is a house dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with freestone quoins and dressings, featuring a 20th-century concrete tile roof gabled at the front, rear, and east side. A 19th-century ashlar stack is present on the east side, and a 20th-century brick stack is at the rear junction with a single-storey lean-to. The original plan comprised a two-unit through-passage, with a 20th-century lean-to added to the east and a 20th-century porch to the front.
The two-storey house has a single-window front. The windows have timber lintels covered with lead flashing and traces of former hoodmoulds; the ground floor window is a 3-light mullioned design.
Inside, the axial passage, originally leading to the adjacent house, is flanked by moulded beams with a cross-beam near the centre. These beams have ogee-stops, indicating the passage was originally in two parts. The front room contains a chamfered axial beam, a 19th-century planked door with wrought-iron strap hinges, and a 3-light window. A deep chimney-breast with an open fire on the right-hand wall has a 20th-century pine bressumer replacing a massive oak one, with remnants of the original oak in the garden. Stairs along the same wall curve to a landing with plank-and-muntin walling, likely repositioned. The attic, comprising three bays, has butt-tenoned purlins and a ridge in notch, featuring elm treads and floorboards.
