Description
Templeman’s Old Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse, with additions from the early 18th century and around 1870. It is now a detached house. The building is constructed of English bond brick, with a later 19th-century build using stretcher bond. The roof is tiled, with Welsh slates to the 19th-century addition. Brick stacks are present. The house comprises three parallel ranges. The symmetrical front, dating to around 1870 and featuring three windows, presents a two-story façade. A recessed central bay contains a two-panel door with reveals and a fanlight within a pilastered surround. Flanking bays feature 12-pane sashes on either side. The first floor includes a 20-pane sash above the door and 20-pane sashes to either side, all with flat arches. Gabled flanking bays have carved bargeboards. The right return has sashes corresponding to the 19th-century build, while earlier sections incorporate sashes, casements, and 20th-century windows, all with matching bargeboards. A rebuilt wall in the right-hand 18th-century range features lozenge-shaped patterns of vitrified brick. The left return has sashes to the front build, with earlier sections retaining sashes and casements, and an 18th-century range to the left has a three-light cast-iron casement and a 20th-century door within a porch. The interior of the 17th-century range showcases timber-framed partitions, chamfered beams with run-out stops or step and concave stops, and planked doors. East and north walls exhibit exposed timber framing faced in brick in the 18th-century section. The roof is a 7-bay structure with butt purlins. The 19th-century addition includes moulded ceiling cornices, four-panel doors, and fireplaces: a marble fireplace with a reeded surround and paterae in the east room, and a classical wooden fireplace in the west room. The 1870s build was commissioned for William Taunton.
