Description
Stratton Cottage is a house that was formerly two cottages, dating from the 17th century. It features a timber-frame structure with chalk rubble, which was originally thatched but now has concrete tiles and weatherboard between the former attic windows. The cottage has a ridge stack and a stack at the north end, with a 20th-century rendered addition at the south end.
The building is two storeys high and has four windows on the front. The upper floor has four windows, including one 20th-century casement pair and three triple casements that were once under eyebrows. The left side of the ground floor is timber-framed with red brick infill set on a high chalk plinth, featuring a casement pair, a 20th-century window in a former door opening, and a triple casement. The right side of the ground floor is made of chalk rubble with angle quoins, containing a door in a 20th-century lean-to and a triple casement. The north end wall is made of chalk, while the rear wall has framing covered in weatherboard, with chalk rubble to the left.
Inside, the cottage has a lobby-entry plan, a timber-lintel fireplace in the center, and a spine beam with run-out stops in the north room, along with a bar-stopped spine beam and wall beams in the south room.
