Description

Number 51 is a mid-19th century house located on Rowden Hill in Chippenham. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with two moulded ashlar stacks at the rear. The building has an L-shaped plan with a rear left wing and stands two storeys high with a four-window range. Architectural details include a platband, plinth, and chamfered rusticated quoins, as well as raised surrounds. The plate-glass sash windows have margin panes with small square panes at the corners. The left-of-centre entrance consists of a four-panelled door that is glazed at the top, accompanied by a fanlight with small margin panes and engaged columns supporting a Tuscan doorcase. Above the door, there is a semicircular-arched window with similar glazing.

Attached to the left corner of the house is a high ashlar wall featuring a semicircular-arched opening that leads to the rear wing. This wall extends forward for approximately 10 meters and connects to a pier at the corner of the garden. The garden is bordered by a low rubblestone wall with freestone coping that runs for about 30 meters. There are chamfered gate piers on the left and another at the right-hand corner, both topped with cornices and pyramidal caps. The interior has not been inspected.
