Description
The barn at Rowden Farm is a structure that may date back to medieval times but was altered in the 17th century. It is built from rubble stone and features a corrugated iron roof. The south side has a projecting gabled cart entry, with lean-to additions on either side. The north entry is supported by buttresses. There are ashlar vent loops arranged regularly, with two on each side of the cart entries and two at each end. Below these loops, small square openings are evenly spaced. The east end wall includes an upper loading door and blocked dove openings. Inside, the barn has a seven-bay layout with a double-purlin roof and tie-beam-and-collar trusses. Heavy cornerstones suggest an early construction date, although the building may have been rebuilt using older stonework, and the ashlar loops could be reused window mullions. The barn also features some graffiti, including the dates 1717 and 1776.
