Description

Honeywood House is a rectory that has been converted into a private house, built between 1855 and 1857 at a cost of £4,466.6s 5d. The building is constructed of rockfaced limestone with Bath stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with attics and consists of four bays. The left bay is gabled and includes a one-storey gabled porch with a two-centred arch that has hollow moulding decorated with trailing ivy. The next bay to the right contains a lower gabled stair window with two lights. The third bay projects outward and features three-light sash windows, with the central opening having a shouldered design and moulding carved with ivy, resembling a door. This bay also has a pent roof and a small gable above, which includes timber framing. There is a six-paned gable dormer with braced bargeboards, and the roof is topped with a tall iron balustrade along the ridge. To the right, there is a single-storey service wing. The building has ashlar stacks and the left elevation features a gabled canted bay. Inside, there is a stone flagged floor with decorated tile bands, and the staircase has a braced iron balustrade. The arms of Pembroke College, which owned the gift of the living, are displayed in the stair window. Honeywood House is a fine example of a substantial mid-19th century rectory.
