Description
Bankside is a house built around 1840, constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and featuring broad slate eaves. It has two storeys and an attic, with a square plan and gabled roofs at the front and rear. The building displays ashlar rusticated quoins, a plinth, a first-floor sill course, window sills, lintels, and a keystone with an arched head above the central door. The east front has three windows, featuring 16-pane sashes, with a 12-pane sash in the attic center. The round-arched doorway is recessed within an arched surround that includes an ashlar head, a raised keystone, and imposts, complemented by plain fanlights. There are two stacks on the north wall and two on the south roof slope. The rear is similar but has a plain cambered-head doorway and a canted timber bay on the ground floor to the right. A small three-storey range to the north has cambered-head casement windows and dentilled eaves. The house was built for J. Banks, a brewer, whose adjacent brewery was established in 1811 and closed in 1895; it has since been demolished. Bankside is prominently situated above Church Hill and is noted for its group value.
