Description
Claremont is a house that features an early 19th-century front added to an earlier range, possibly from the 16th or 17th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with end stacks and one ridge stack on the front range, while the parallel rear range is partially roughcast and includes a ridge stack and a stack at the north end. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The formal front elevation was originally rendered and has a moulded coping at the parapet. The first floor has three windows, consisting of 12-pane sash windows on each side and a round-headed sash window in the center. The ground floor has five windows, all 12-pane sashes, and features a central door with a metal traceried fanlight, framed by an ashlar surround with imposts and a keystone. There are 20th-century glazed doors. The rear range contains sashes in the south end wall and includes a gabled projecting stair tower with a smaller gable attached to the right. The interior is said to have a spiral staircase in the stair tower.
