Description

St Mary's Chapel of Rest is a cemetery chapel located in Tidworth, primarily built in the early 19th century. It is said to be on the site of an older church and is surrounded by a graveyard that contains tombstones dating from the late 18th century. The chapel is constructed from flint and tile and consists of a single cell with a western porch and a stone bell-turret. The roof is plain, and the flint walls feature stone dressings, bands on the west gable, and short flat buttresses at the west ends. The east wall includes a 14th-century traceried three-light window from the old church, flanked by small lancet windows. The plain porch has a pointed arch with a keystone. Inside, the chapel has dado panelling throughout, which is more ornate in the raised sanctuary that includes a communion rail made of turned balusters. Monuments of various dates are located on each side wall, including those from 1647, 1730, 1775, 1806, and 1855. Additionally, there is an 18th-century font made of veined marble, featuring a moulded oval basin on a baluster with an elongated-octagonal plan.
