Description

The Barrack Block (Building 62) at Jellalabad Barracks is a two-storey building constructed around 1905. It is made of brick with rubbed brick dressings, features brick ridge stacks, and has a slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan and includes two attached front towers that house non-commissioned officer (NCO) rooms and storage areas.

The exterior displays a symmetrical design with a range of seven windows on each side. Each section has a coped fire wall and a central double doorway with a boarded door, flanked by segmental-arched paired 2/2-pane sash windows that include an overlight. A full-length cast-iron verandah spans two storeys and features first-floor railings with diagonal bars. The pairs of sections are complemented by two-storey square storage towers, which are connected by bridges to the first floor above external dogleg stairs. Each floor of the towers has two rear 6/6-pane sash windows. The rear of the building includes two ablution blocks.

While the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have entrances leading to through passages that connect the barrack rooms.

Historically, Tidworth was established after the Army purchased Salisbury Plain for large-scale training exercises. This barrack block is one of four identical double company blocks, each containing six 12-man rooms arranged symmetrically, and it forms part of a battalion unit within Tidworth Barracks. It is recognized as an important example of standardized barrack design.
