Description

The Black Swan Public House dates to around 1857 and is built in a traditional local Georgian style. It is a two-storey building with a basement, and has three windows. The exterior is ashlar construction, designed in the style of a villa, with a central break. Features include a stepped plinth, side piers, draughted ground floor detailing, a band at first floor level, a cornice that mitres over the piers, a blocking course with a shallow pediment over the central bay, and sash windows with marginal glazing.

The central doorpiece is pilastered and has a cornice, above a plain door with a rectangular light. There are five steps leading to the door, with a guard rail to a blocked basement area on the right. Two painted scroll panels are located on the first floor, likely remnants of a previous inn sign, and there is a projecting cast and wrought iron bracket for an inn sign. The west elevation is similar. The front door consists of four raised and fielded panels and has cast iron railings to the left, some with floral finials.

A two-storey, three-window projecting extension is located to the north. The building forms a group with numbers 1 to 13 (inclusive), the central block of the District Hospital, and numbers 16 to 29 (inclusive).
