Description

The terrace at 39 to 54 Newtown dates from around 1830 and is constructed of ashlar stone. It comprises two storeys and features a band above the ground-floor level and a sill band to the first floor. A parapet runs along the roofline, with a ramped section above number 45; numbers 52 and 54 are situated on a slightly raised level. The roof ridges are gabled. Each property originally had two windows, featuring late-glazed sash windows. Numbers 48, 49, and 53 have been altered, with raised surrounds incorporating rustic voussoirs. The doorways are round-headed, some with fanlights, some blind. Numbers 43 and 47 to 50 have blind fanlights; numbers 46 and 54 have radial fan designs, while numbers 51 and 52 feature swagged shields in their fanlights. The doorways are finished with reeded lintels and impost blocks. The terrace is set back from the street with long front gardens. Numbers 39 and 40, and numbers 44 and 45, are designed as paired properties. Number 42 displays a Fire Insurance Mark, depicting a British lion and shield. Numbers 39 to 54 form a group, demonstrating group value.
