Description

This is a terrace of 12 buildings dating from around 1815 to 1830. They are typical examples of their time, constructed in a variety of brick styles and with a consistent pattern of one window per floor. The buildings are red brick with stone cill bands at the first and second floors, a moulded stone cornice supported on brick modillions, brick parapets, and a stone cope. Numbers 35 and 36 are slightly raised, while numbers 30 to 34 have stone lintels designed to look like brick arches. The windows are mostly sash windows with glazing bars and alternating blind panels, all with brick flat arches and moulded keystones. First-floor windows are segmental headed, with numbers 30 and 31 having later-replaced sashes, and number 34 featuring casements. Numbers 27 and 28 lack blind panels. Ground-floor windows remain at numbers 25, 28, 29 and 35, while the others have been replaced with modern shop fronts and alterations. Original six-panel doors are found at numbers 26, 28, 30 (modern), and 33; number 34 features a traceried fanlight, and number 35 has a pair of modern fanlights. The end treatment of number 36 incorporates a slight setback, returned bands, and cornice. The cill of the first floor at number 36 has "George Street" carved into it. Stonework is also visible at the rear of numbers 30 to 33, notably a cornice.
