Description
This is a symmetrical pair of large houses located on Endless Street. They date from the 18th century, and were listed at Grade II*, acknowledging their exceptional group value. The houses are three storeys with an attic, built of brick on a stone plinth. They have a moulded and bracketed cornice, a brick parapet with stone coping swept up at the corners and in the centre, and a central rainwater head that is cast and moulded. The roof is a mansard roof covered in old tile, with four hipped dormer windows. The gable ends are shaped. There are ten windows on each upper floor, with rubbed arches and painted keystones. On the first floor, the five windows to the right have early 19th century wrought iron balustrades. Eight similar windows are on the ground floor, although one is a facsimile restoration replacing a later service door. The front doors are panelled with radiating fanlights and architraves, set within deep arched reveals. The doorcases are constructed of engaged Doric columns, a broken entablature with dentilled and bracketed cornices, and open pediments. The interior of No. 54 features a contemporary panelled hall and staircase with slender turned mahogany balusters, a handrail, and carved spandrels. The south wall of No. 52 is tile-hung. Nos 52 to 56 (even) and 60 to 74 (even) form a group.
