Description

Eveleigh House is a detached house, dating from the early 19th century. It has been converted into flats. The house is constructed of solid rendered walls with a hipped pantiled roof. A rendered chimney sits on the middle of the right side of the roof, and two smaller chimneys are located on the left side wall. It is a double-fronted building, with at least two rooms projecting to the rear.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with three windows and a central doorway. The design incorporates picturesque Gothic details, with all openings featuring pointed, incurving arches. The front door is half-glazed and has a fanlight with intersecting glazing bars that follow the curve of the arch. The windows are 2-light wood casements with small-paned glazing and margin-panes; the ground floor windows have four panes per light, while those above have three. Transom-lights above the ground-floor windows mirror the design of the front door fanlight. Upper-storey windows have slatted external shutters shaped to match the arches. A deep flat eaves-cornice runs around all four sides of the building. A similar window to those on the front, but with a flat head and without a transom-light, is located on the ground floor of the right-hand side wall. The rear wall, facing Eveleigh Close, features five flat-headed windows with 6-paned sashes. The left side wall has been altered, with the addition of several lean-to projections, including a weatherboarded closet in the upper storey.

Eveleigh House is built in a style associated with the Gillard family of Brixham, who constructed several villas for themselves and their daughters, including Burton Villa, Burton Street, and Norton House and Aylmer on Milton Street.
