Description

Numbers 5, 7 (Beams Cottage), and 9 are a row of three cottages located at right angles to Burton Street in Higher Brixham. Numbers 5 and 7 likely date from the 17th century or earlier and were remodeled in the early to mid-19th century, while number 9 was added or rebuilt during the same period. The cottages have solid rendered walls and slated roofs, with number 9 featuring a hipped roof facing Burton Street.

Number 5 has a large, old rendered chimney on its right gable, with a later chimney at the rear. Number 9 has a part-rendered, part-stone rubble chimney on its right gable and a rendered chimney on its left side wall. The buildings are two storeys tall, with number 9 also having a basement. Numbers 5 and 7 are a mirrored pair, each four windows wide, with doorways positioned centrally. The door at number 5 is from the 19th century, featuring two flush panels below and one large glazed panel above. A late 19th-century canopy with shaped brackets extends over both doorways.

The windows have 20th-century wood casements, except for the ground-storey window at number 7, which has a canted bay slightly recessed within an earlier opening. The cottages have deep, flat eaves-cornices. Number 9 has a two-window front facing Burton Street, with a blank space to the right where a third window would typically be expected. Its doorway is set in a slight projection at the centre, with a flat, deep eaves-cornice that breaks forward around it. Above the doorway is a round-arched window with two-paned sashes, and the windows to the left have 20th-century wood frames. There are also two similar windows in the side wall to the right.
