Description

Burton Court is a large detached house, built in the early 19th century and later converted into flats. It is situated on Burton Street in Higher Brixham. The house has solid rendered walls and a hipped, slate roof, with a rendered chimney on each side wall. It follows a double-fronted, double-depth plan with short flanking wings. The main block is three storeys high and the wings are two storeys. The facade has a three-window central section flanked by single-window wings. A round-arched doorway is positioned in the centre and approached by a flight of steps; it features half-glazed double doors with coloured margin panes and a patterned fanlight, set within a deep porch supported by slender, fluted columns. The windows are 6-paned sashes in box frames. A deep, flat eaves cornice runs above the main block, featuring paired brackets. The 1975 list description notes the presence of an open string staircase, renewed on the ground floor, that runs to the centre of the house and is lit by a tall, round-headed window in the rear wall. The front terrace is raised and features an iron railing with lily-heads on the uprights and moulded and enriched standards.
