Description
The walls, bridge, and steps of the lane raised over the drive to the west of Lower Lodge in Torquay date from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from local stone rubble with red sandstone dressings. This lane, which runs off the south side of Cockington Lane, carries a track over the sunken drive that leads to Cockington Court, located directly behind Lower Lodge. The bridge, which is part of the carriageway through the lodge, features a round arch. A tall parapet wall conceals the lane from the drive and includes a blind Tudor-style limestone mullioned window, with the wall itself being crenellated. On the south side of the drive, there is a round-headed doorway that provides access to stone steps leading up to another similar doorway through the parapet wall. These walls and steps are part of a particularly attractive group of listed buildings in Cockington Park and the nearby unspoilt village.
