Description

This is a detached villa, built in 1824 by Ellis, and subsequently altered. It was unoccupied at the time of inspection. The villa is plastered with a slate roof, featuring gables at each end and stacks with rendered shafts, platbands, and some old chimney pots. The original plan comprises a double-depth main block facing south, with an entrance on the west side. A service wing extends at a right angle to the northeast. The south front presents a symmetrical appearance with two windows, and a moulded cornice below a parapet. The ground floor now has two 20th-century French windows, originally fitted with decayed Venetian shutters. The first floor has two casements replacing 19th-century casements, also with decayed Venetian shutters. A large, later 19th-century two-storey canted bay is visible on the right return, with two over four-pane sashes on the first floor and French windows on the ground floor. A porch is missing from the left return. The rear service wing retains its original small-pane 19th-century sashes. The interior was not inspected but may contain features of interest. Ellis’s historical survey of Torquay records the property on page 337.
